Any abnormality of the womb can cause a menstrual disorder such as heavy bleeding, frequent bleeding, post-menopausal bleeding or painful periods.
First line management includes the taking of a full history and performing an examination. This usually involves an internal examination.
Investigations might include an ultrasound scan and hormone tests. An investigation called a hysteroscopy is used to diagnose lesions of the lining of the womb. An operation called laparoscopy is often performed for women with painful periods.
