Follicle tracking involves a series of ultrasound scans usually taking between 5 and 10 minutes to complete using a sterile transducer paying particular attention to the follicles within the ovaries. The tracking is done to assess how the follicles are developing. It generally starts around day 9 to day 14 of the menstrual cycle. The scanning continues until the follicle(s) have disappeared, and ovulation has commenced. From this information we advise our patient/couple when best to have sexual intercourse. Optimising the time the egg and sperm meet. If, however, a couple has discovered that the semen quality is suboptimal, then we will schedule an intrauterine insemination (IUI).
